My art is rooted in the ethics of documentary photography. I don't alter what is, and I won't enhance what isn't. Beauty is in the subtlety of the every day and in the nuance of the unusual. The act of meeting, exchanging, and capturing; births a relationship that I have devoted my life to repeating. With my project, I challenge audiences to loosen their grip on definite ideas; while welcoming the subject to take up as much space as ultimately possible. In doing this, the subject then fills out the edges of a story we've lived so many times, and continue repeating. I am covering border stories of migration and immigration through layers and dimensions of the in between.
Entre Orillas, is about the development and building of a strong relationship of trust, and knowledge exchange, encouraged through the close collaboration of subjects and photographer. The project parallels many individual stories united by border and migration themes. I am focused on topics and ideas that are central to my identity and experience. This act of cohesive and parallel storytelling is broadening the narrative on themes too often shown in one dimension. Entre Orillas, is creating a safe space to speak on transnational ideas about the borderlands.
I’m a storyteller and visual communicator that produces in-depth stories on identity through the nuances in between. As a daughter of immigrants from the Caribbean Republic of Colombia, I have struggled with the concept of 'home.' As immigrants, we are everywhere and we have to belong somewhere so we’ve made habitats for ourselves in pocket towns of people like us. I’m documenting to show you something I’ve found and ultimately, something I am. I’m documenting so you know I was here.
I am an artist, an educator, a black girl, brown girl, white girl, afro-caribe, berraquera, queer, nepantlera, fronteriza, homie.. I am growing into the many things that were made for me.
