Childless or childfree? Women who do not have children. I am forty-eight and childfree. I have never wanted children. Occasionally I question myself if I made the right decision? Am I infertile? How would a child have changed my life? How would having a child have affected my career as an artist? Why would I want to bring a child into a world of uncertainty? Mum’s Not The Word brings together images of the female form, positioned in the fetus position, in reverse. The fetus is representational of an intimate and introspective metaphysical investigation. It is a posture that relates to the female as reproducer and acts as a metaphor for the seed within.
I am a British photographer currently working in London, Brighton and Essex. My photography migrates between creative portraiture and documentary photography. I am driven by research led projects and collaborate with my subjects to create cutting edge images that speak out about current issues, to reveal a truthful voice, and promote unity, equality and compassion.
I was awarded a scholarship to study MA Photojournalism part-time. I graduated from the University of Westminster in 2014 with a Distinction. My major project 'I’m Not Voting Because..' received an Honourable Mention in the Editorial Political category of the International Photography Awards student category 2014 and professional category 2015. 'I’m Not Voting Because..' was published in the run up to the UK General Election by the BBC, The Observer - New Review, The Guardian and Huck Magazine. INVB received a nomination for the Magnum and London Photo Graduate Award 2015..
In 2016, my series ‘Mum’s Not The Word’ , was shortlisted in the People category of the Sony World Photography Awards and was shown at Somerset House, London and Photokina, Cologne in the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition curated by Zelda Cheatle. Later in that year MNTW received a Nomination Award from Photogrvphy Grant and Magazine and I was a finalist in the 9th Pollux Awards.
In 2017 I exhibited 'I'm Not Voting Because..' at The Devonshire Collective in Eastbourne during the run up to the UK Snap Election. My ongoing series 'Mum's Not The Word' received an Honourable Mention in the Julia Margaret Cameron Award and is going to be exhibited with the winners and select finalists at ValidPhoto Barcelona during September and October 2017.
